Life as a working artist.
Joy is lucky enough to call Burlington, Vermont home and enjoys brainstorming new designs while she walks on the shores of Lake Champlain. She incorporates energetic healing into the artwork she creates, literally stitching blessings into each piece. To create truly holistic designs, she strives for equal parts beauty and functionality. As a designer and artist, Joy works in a kaleidoscope of mediums.
Over the past decade, Joy has successfully navigated her career across the arts: blending healing arts with visual arts – fine tuning it through the entrepreneurial art of small business. She continues to passionately explore new ways to connect all her talents in synergistic ways. The main connection is, and has always been, people. She derives inspiration from nature and the human body; she loves working on art that supports function. Art that can be worn? Even better!
She graduated from the Finger Lakes School of Massage, and became state licensed and nationally certified in Massage Therapy (practicing over twenty styles of therapeutic massage and energetic healing). After graduating from massage school, she began training at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) where she studied pattern making, sewing, fashion design and interior design. Joy has been sewing since the age of 7, and has been formally training in fine arts since that age. Throughout her life, she continued art studies to evolve her practice and learn new mediums. After leaving NYC (FIT) she attended Hartford Art School for studio arts, where she solidified her practice in the art of fine crafts. Here, she practiced ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, and more fine and studio arts. She began nonprofit development, where she learned the art of event planning, fundraising including grant writing, sponsorship, and donor support. She has owned and operated several successful small businesses over the past decade.
Joy received her Bachelor’s Degree from Johnson State College where she blended her fine arts background with psychology and education courses in support of Art Education. She began teaching art in Southwestern Vermont in 2007 and returned to school (UVM) to became an art teacher. Joy became a Licensed Art Educator (preK-12) in 2018. As if that wasn't enough, Joy also cheerfully face paints nearly every weekend, and welcomes you to check out her other business VermontFaceAndBody.com for more information on temporary body art and healing.
